    OOCYTE VITRIFICATION (CRYOPRESERVATION)

Oocyte vitrification, commonly known as egg freezing, is nowadays an innovative, widespread and safe technique for a woman to maintain and preserve her fertility, until she is ready for motherhood.

Oocyte vitrification can be applied for either female or male reasons.

Regarding female reasons vitrification is indicated not only for women who wish to have children in the future, but also for those who have medical history (low AMH, high FSH or indications of early menopause) or face various ethical reasons . It is highly recommended in cases of health issues when chemotherapy or radiation therapy is required (ovarian tissue can be cryopreserved too).

Male reasons could be the long period absence of the spouse, difficulty in producing sperm and medical reasons (serious health issues or dysfunction of the male gonads).

With this process unfertilized oocytes can be vitrified and offers the autonomy to do family planning in a future time with a fertility potential of a younger age, without pressure or fear of running out of time.

Oocyte vitrification  is a “traditional” IVF cycle, with a protocol adjusted to the woman’s medical history and hormonal profile, which means

    • ovarian stimulation and hormonal measurements
    • ultrasound monitoring of the follicle/s size
    • a simple, invasive technique (egg collection) when follicles have reached the right size and maturity
    • and vitrification of the mature oocytes as a final step.

In IVF Athens Center, our specially trained embryologists, always keeping up with latest evolvements in IVF, use “The Cryotop® Method” for oocyte vitrification and warming.  This method is applied in more than 2,500,000 clinical cases annually worldwide (over 115 countries and 3,000 assisted reproduction centers). Hundreds of scientific publications certify this method’s excellence regarding the survival rates (as shown below).

Any woman who wishes to “safeguard” her fertility should pay special attention to the following:

Α. An individualized/customized, light stimulation protocol.
Β. A Registered Centre of Reproductive Medicine that will guarantee the preservation of the “valuable” oocytes.
    C. A skilled embryological laboratory.
    D. A trustworthy and efficient relationship of the woman with the doctor and the staff of the Unit (as that will prove valuable so as to facilitate the process smoothly and without anxiety).

    FAQs for Oocyte Cryopreservation

What is the age limit for oocyte vitrification?

Actually, there is no age cut-off for oocyte vitrification, nevertheless the potential of live birth for these oocytes reduces as age increases. Women who wish to proceed to oocyte freezing should do so the earlier possible. That is because, if you undergo the procedure at the age of 28 and you decide to use them at the age of 38, your success chances are that of a 28-year old woman and not a 38-year old.

If I freeze my eggs, can I still have kids in a natural way?

Yes, of course you can. While the procedure of oocyte vitrification, we use only the oocytes assigned to a specific menstrual cycle. So, the oocyte reserve of a woman still remains.

How many oocytes should I freeze?

Every patient’s situation is unique and different, but an average of 8-10 mature oocytes is ideal to achieve at least one baby.
